My Story: Marine Corps Veteran, Construction Professional, and Founder of Velney Construction
When I founded Velney Construction, I wanted to build more than just buildings—I wanted to build a company founded on service, integrity, and accountability. Those values were instilled in me during my time in the United States Marine Corps and continue to guide every project my team and I take on today.
I proudly served five years in the United States Marine Corps, completing two combat deployments to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During my service, I was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon for actively engaging in ground combat alongside my fellow Marines. Those experiences taught me how to lead under pressure, solve problems in challenging environments, and always put the mission and my team first.
I also completed a third deployment aboard a U.S. Navy ship supporting maritime security operations off the Horn of Africa. During that deployment, our unit helped capture 32 pirates operating off the coast of Africa, helping protect international shipping lanes and global commerce. For my leadership and service during that mission, I was honored to receive the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal.
The Marine Corps taught me lessons that I carry into my business every day: integrity, discipline, accountability, leadership, teamwork, and an unwavering commitment to accomplishing the mission. Construction projects, much like military operations, require planning, communication, trust, and a team that is committed to achieving a common goal. Those principles have become the foundation of Velney Construction.
While my military service shaped who I am as a leader, I also believe it was important to invest in my education and professional development. I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management and have continued expanding my knowledge of the construction industry by obtaining an Unrestricted Massachusetts Construction Supervisor License (CSL), a Massachusetts Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) License, Certified Passive House Builder (CPHB) certification, and an OSHA 30 Construction Safety Certification.
These credentials provide me with a strong understanding of construction management, building codes, jobsite safety, energy-efficient building practices, project planning, and quality control. Combined with years of hands-on experience as a general contractor, real estate developer, and construction manager, they allow me to confidently lead projects from concept to completion.
Today, I am incredibly proud that Velney Construction is recognized as both a Massachusetts Veteran-Owned Business Enterprise (VBE) through the Massachusetts Supplier Diversity Office (SDO) and a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) through the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).
