My Journey from the Marine Corps to Building Velney Construction
Before I became a licensed construction supervisor, commercial builder, and real estate developer, I had the privilege of serving our country in the United States Marine Corps.
During my five years of military service, I completed two combat deployments to Iraq and later deployed aboard a United States Navy ship supporting maritime security operations. During that deployment, our task force successfully captured 32 pirates operating off the coast of Africa.
Those experiences challenged me in ways that are difficult to describe.
They taught me how to lead under pressure.
How to make decisions with limited information.
How to prepare for the unexpected.
How to rely on a team.
And perhaps most importantly, they taught me that trust is earned through actions—not words.
When my military service ended, I returned home to Somerville with a new mission.
I invested in my education, earning a degree in Building Construction Management from Wentworth Institute of Technology, obtaining my construction licenses, and continuing to build experience in construction and real estate development while working as a firefighter in Somerville.
